At this very moment, the rainbow flag is being hoisted on Trier’s marked square. For the first time in history, Trier shows its pride of being a tolerant, friendly and open city by allowing the flag to flutter at central places. After a rather lengthy discussion in the City Council this May, in which the Christian conservatives mainly opposed the idea (allegedly for reasons other than homophobia) of flying the flag, the motion, which had been brought forward by human rights activists of the Green Party and the Social Democrats, was eventually endorsed by the majority of the house. It is part of the CSD weekend here.
