There are various reasons for sticking to Opera, the best browser–if you ask me–on this planet. Alas! It is rather slow, especially when it comes to Flash videos, but then it has such nice features such as “quick search”, where you just enter your search query together with a key letter into the address bar. In my version of Opera, I enter “g gelblog” to search Google.com for “gelblog”. Then I have key letters for the Google image search, for Yahoo and several library catalogues as well as Wikipedia in English and in German. Firefox comes with some pre-installed “quick searches” which I must have deleted upon install together with all the other pointless stuff, somebody decided for users to have them from the very start.
Anyway, the way to install some keyword searches in Firefox is this (adapted from Noscope):
- Go to a search engine, search for something you can easily find in a URL.
- Edit the search URL, and replace your search words with “%s”.
- Bookmark this URL. You may want to create a new folder for these keyword searches.
- Secondary-click the bookmark, and type in a keyword in the “Keyword” box.
So the URLs in the bookmarks can be something like this:
- For Google.com: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%s
- For Google’s image search: http://images.google.com/images?q=%s
- For the English Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=%s
- For the German Wikipedia: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Suche/%s
